Dispose of specimens properly. I like to use groups of 3 or 4 per dissection, this saves on specimens and it allows students to work at their own comfort level. Video, Model, Demonstration, and Dissection – In addition to above, students can work in small groups to perform a cow eye dissection. I like to use fresh specimens whenever possible, visiting your local butcher or farm is an option to look into instead of the preserved specimens, and generally are less expensive. Video, Model, and Demonstration – In addition to above, students can observe a cow eye demonstration. Some students may be very uncomfortable watching the video and they can either turn around and listen or may have to leave the room. Using diagrams and clay/playdoh, students can create a model of the eye or use a scientific model to identify the structure and function of each part of the eye. Video & Model Only – share and discuss the video above. There are several different ways you can use this lesson in the classroom. In summary, I had a wonderful time educating the students at Windemere Ranch Middle School. The cow eye dissection is a great lesson to use as part of your unit on the nervous system and the five senses. A eye chart included so the students could check their vision at home. ![]() The information included vision and learning, the effects of digital device use, and how to prevent nearsightedness or myopia from becoming worse. At the end of the class, I gave out goody bags containing information pamphlets on eye conditions. Gloves were used of course! This was a fun way to increase their understanding on cow eye anatomy and function. Many of the students were interested in becoming a doctor and it was great to see them engaged and asking great questions.Īfter the dissection was completed, I took the parts of the cow eye and went to each table to allow the students to touch and feel parts of the cow eye. I also explained to them what I do as an optometrist including prescribing eyeglasses, contact lenses, and treat medical conditions of the eye. This gave the students a good starting point and allowed them to follow along during the dissection. I went over the anatomy of the cow eye using a diagram that was passed out to each student before the dissection. With the help of the 6th grade science teachers, I performed 15 cow eye dissections over a 3 day period for 450 students. I had the opportunity to educate the 6th grade science classes at Windemere Ranch Middle School in San Ramon this past week.
